2012 Southeast Tournament

Goodlettsville (Tenn.) Baseball Little League earned its first berth in the Little League Baseball World Series tonight by winning the championship game of the Southeast Region Tournament over Warner Robins (Ga.) American Little League by a 1-0 score. It is the first time since 1987 the state of Tennessee will be represented in the World Series.

The Tennessee State Champions scored the only run of the game in the second inning when leading hitting Phillip Carter, who came into the title game hitting .500 in the tournament, led off with a single. Lorenzo Butler then reached on an error and both runners moved up one base on a passed ball. After Stephen Snyder was hit by a pitch to load the bases, a passed ball with two outs plated the only run of the game.

Goodlettsville Baseball Little League starter Brock Myers went the first five innings, did not allow a hit, and struck out nine. He reached his pitch limit to get the final batter of the fifth inning. Jacob Rucker worked the sixth inning allowing a leadoff single to Kody Winner, the first hit of the game for Warner Robins American Little League. But, that threat was erased when the next batter popped out to Rucker, and Winner was doubled off first base. Rucker struck out the next batter to put a team from Tennessee in the World Series for only the fifth time.

The pitching of Goodlettsville Baseball Little League allowed only one base runner in the game to reach third base, which was in the first inning, and only one other runner to reach second base, that coming in the fourth inning.

Goodlettsville Baseball Little League advanced to the title game, played at Southeast Park at Little League’s Southeastern Region Headquarters in Warner Robins, by beating Tar Heel Little League from Greenville, N.C., in one semifinal, 9-3. Warner Robins American Little League reached the championship game with a 5-1 win over Great Falls (Va.) Little League. Warner Robins American Little League was looking for its fourth trip to the World Series having earned a berth in 2007, 2009 and 2011. They won the 2007 World Series.

Goodlettsville Baseball Little League joins Aguadulce Cabezera Little League from Aguadulce, Panama, the Latin America Region Champion; Kitasuna Little League from Tokyo, Japan, the Japan Region Tournament Champion; Asia-Pacific Region Champion, Kuei-Shan Little League from Taoyuan County, Chinese Taipei; Pariba Little League from Willemstad, Curacao, the Caribbean Region Champion; Middle East & Africa Champion, Lugazi Little League from Lugazi, Uganda; Mexico Region Champion, Oriente Little League from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico; KMC American Little League from Ramstein Air Base, Germany, the Europe Champion; McAllister Park National Little League from San Antonio, Texas, the Southwest Region Champion; and Great Lakes Region Champion, New Castle (Ind.) Little League International Mourns the Passing of Dr. Robert Yasui

Dr. Robert Yasui

By Communications Division
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.

Little League International mourns the passing on Monday of Dr. Robert Yasui, who was the Little League Baseball World Series physician for more than 50 years until his retirement a few years ago.

"Dr. Yasui was an outstanding physician during his many decades of service to Little League and the greater Williamsport community," Stephen D. Keener, President and Chief Executive Officer of Little League Baseball and Softball. "But more than that, Dr. Yasui was a great husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a good and faithful friend to all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Phyllis, and the entire Yasui family."

When a young Robert Yasui was a student at the University of Oregon at the start of World War II, his family was forced to abandon their home and were interned by the U.S. Government at a camp in California. The camp was for Japanese-Americans who had committed no crime, but were interned simply because of their heritage.

The Yasui family lost most of their belongings, and Robert was expelled from the university.

But they refused to be bitter.

"It does not do any good to hold a grudge," he said in an interview with Little League International several years ago. "I loved this country then, and I love it now."

Robert later graduated from the University of Wisconsin, then Temple University Medical School. He served his residency in Williamsport, where he met Phyllis, settled here, and raised their family.

"All of us at Little League who knew Dr. Yasui are richer for it," Mr. Keener said. "He was a man whose anger would have been justified against those who wronged him and his family. Instead, he showed not only forgiveness, but was a peaceful man who worked tirelessly to make his community and the world a better place."

Little League International Recognizes Best Safety Plans in the United States at Annual ASAP Breakfast

By Communications Division
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
September 12, 2012

Little League’s national and regional winners for safety awareness and preparedness were honored during the 66th Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

On Saturday, Aug, 25, Little League’s A Safety Awareness Program (ASAP) was the focus of a breakfast that recognized the contentious efforts of several local leagues in each of the five regions in the United States.

Rancho Niguel Little League (RNLL) in Laguna Niguel, Calif., was the recipient of the 2012 ASAP National Award. The league will receive a set of lights for one of its fields from Musco Sports Lighting for being named the national award winner.

The top two plans in each Little League region were:

Central Region: Plymouth Canton Little League (Canton, Mich.); Riverfield Little League (Anderson, Ind.) Southeastern Region: Bristol (Tenn.) Little League; Capital Midwestern Little League (Charleston, W. Va.) Western Region: Rancho Niguel Little League (Laguna Niguel, Calif.); Chino (Calif.) American Little League Eastern Region: Thompson Little League (North Grosvenor Dale, Conn.); Bayonne (N.J.) Central Little League Southwestern Region: Oak Ridge Woodlands Area Little League (The Woodlands, Texas); League City (Texas) American Little League

One of the major considerations in Little League Baseball and Softball’s decision-making process is the safety of the players, coaches and volunteers in the program. In 1995, ASAP was established to encourage local leagues to formulate a safety program that could be used as their guideline.

Since the program’s inception, the top plans in each of the five U.S. Little League Regions are selected and from that pool a national winner is chosen.

Little League International Announces Name of New Baseball Division

By Communications Division
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
September 27, 2012

Little League International today announced the name of its newest baseball division: The Little League Intermediate (50/70) Baseball Division.

The division, the first new program in Little League since 1999, bridges the transition from Little League (46/60) to Junior League Baseball on a full-size field (60/90). It is a league for 11-13 year-olds whose advanced skills permit rules that are closer to conventional baseball, such as leading off bases, pickoff attempts, etc.

In the traditional Little League (Majors) Division, a runner cannot leave the base until the pitched ball reaches the batter, so pickoffs are not part of the game at that level. In addition, Intermediate (50/70) Baseball Division games will be played on a field that is not quite as large as a conventional diamond, but bigger than the traditional Little League field.

The Little League International Board of Directors publicly announced the creation of the Intermediate (50/70) Baseball Division in its annual spring meeting in May. That decision came after volunteer District Administrators voted overwhelmingly to create a new program for 11-13 year-olds.

For the past three seasons, local Little Leagues around the world have chartered 50/70 Pilot Programs, with experimental rule changes along the way to the vote by District Administrators at the Round Table sessions held at various locations around the world early this year. The name of the new division was developed after Little League International consulted with thousands of volunteers and parents worldwide.
