1. Keep in short and only target a few schools.Websites and baseball coaching associations are great tools to target the school of your choice. You not only can get some great advice, but also be able to view some resources and pick up some baseball hitting tips.
2. Even schools down the road you think you would want to play for, contact some or one of the coaches there to intiate a conversation. Always consider baseball hitting videos of yourself (more on this to come), as well as a profile on your baseball abilities that can be inserted on a website or Facebook. This doesn’t mean you need to spend $100’s of dollars on a fancy website. You can create your website, or even use a video hosting company. Get some advice on your videos from coaches….. who knows, they have some baseball hitting tips to pass along.
3. Schedules are tough for coaches, and they may not get out as much as they would like to see a player. Coaches sometimes may only have about an hour to see you play, and may not get a good idea of what you can do! In regards to recording some baseball hitting videos, be sure to have these handy. Don’t send them 6 video tapes. Show highlights of you hitting, pitching, or fielding… Make sure it’s no longer than 8-10 minutes. If you’re good, and they see something in you, they’ll make the time to come out and see you play, maybe even with a baseball scholarship in hand.
4. Hopefully, the coach will come out and see you play after you’ve sent the video, but be sure to follow up afterwards! When a baseball coach likes you playing ability, don’t limit your self. If the college is close to you, hop in your car and attend… who knows, you might get some face time with the coach. Sometimes they may not have any scholarships left even if they are interested, but get their email and phone and stay in their future plans. This is what happened to me… Right up until the beginning of the fall season, about 2 months to go, I got a call from Frank Walton, UAB’s hitting coach, giving me a scholarship.
Also, be sure to attend local baseball clinics and MLB tryouts… it can be a great learning experience, and even pick up some techniques from other players.
